The Game of Thrones cast, sorted

Game of Thrones asks the same question in different accents: what will you do to stay alive, and what will you refuse to do? Every character in this cast has an answer, and the fun is that none of them is entirely satisfying. The honorable ones pay for it. The ruthless ones pay for it too, just later. The series is a long argument about whether virtue and power can live in the same person.

The cleanest fault line is Ned Stark against Littlefinger. Ned believes in doing the right thing and trusting that the world will meet you halfway. Petyr Baelish believes the world is a ladder and that only fools expect fairness. Most of the cast sits somewhere between those two poles. Jon Snow leans toward Ned, though he learns where the limits are. Sansa begins as a believer and learns, painfully, to read a room like Littlefinger without becoming him.

The Lannisters complicate the picture. Tyrion has the sharpest mind in Westeros and a private habit of using it to hide how much he wants to be valued. Cersei has an iron love for her children and no ability to see past it. Jaime is the one who changes, and the show's most generous argument is that a person can be a villain in one season and something harder to name in the next.

Then there are the people who watch from the margins. Varys serves whoever he thinks is best for the realm, which makes him both the most principled and the most unsettling figure at court. Brienne serves an oath with a stubbornness that nobody else can match. Daenerys wants to break the wheel, and the show keeps asking what the wheel will do to her in return.

It also helps to notice what each character treats as the thing worth being loyal to. Ned and Brienne are loyal to an oath. Cersei and Jaime are loyal to blood, though they disagree on what blood requires. Varys is loyal to the realm, Littlefinger to himself, and Daenerys to an idea of justice that she carries from city to city. When you answer the questions, you are quietly choosing which of those loyalties you would trust under pressure, and which you would regret.

This quiz covers the full series, which ran on HBO from 2011 to 2019. The questions are about work, money, family and friends, not battles, so you can answer honestly without a sword. Where the series describes Sansa, the quiz uses her later seasons. And if you land on someone you would rather not be, that is the point: the show is at its best when it makes you wonder why you answered that way.
