The Friends cast, sorted

Friends is usually described as a show about being young in New York, and it is. But its sharper subject is how long a group of people can postpone adulthood together. Over ten seasons the six leads change jobs, apartments and partners, and the one fixed point is the coffeehouse couch. The comfort of the show is also its fault line: the question is whether these friendships help the six grow up, or help them avoid it.

Rachel and Ross are the cast's great argument. Rachel begins by walking out of her own wedding, and spends the series learning what an independent life costs. Ross is a decent man with a stubborn belief that he is owed an outcome. Fans have fought for decades over the break in Season 3, and the fight is really about whose version of events the show treats as the truth. Both sides have quotable evidence, and both sides are a little right.

Monica and Chandler are the show's study in how control and humor can live in the same apartment. Monica wants her life to run the way her kitchen does, and competes at everything, including board games and Thanksgiving football. Chandler uses jokes like a door he can close behind him. Together they become the group's most stable couple, which is the show's quiet comment on what happens when someone chooses you back.

Joey and Phoebe are the romantics, pointed in opposite directions. Joey is loyal in the most direct way possible and bewildered by almost everything else. Phoebe trusts instincts the others dismiss, and the show repeatedly proves her more perceptive than she is credited for. Then there are Gunther and Janice, the supporting players who work as mirrors. One loves without speaking for years. The other speaks without pause for just as long.

This quiz is built from choices, not catchphrases. You will be asked what you would do when a friend is crying into a latte, when an ex walks in, when money, jobs and bets get complicated. Each answer points toward the character who would most likely make the same call. Gunther and Janice are in the pool on purpose. Anyone who has loved quietly, or talked over a whole room, will recognize the type, even if the result surprises you.
